SLAVERY

Today our Anti-Human Trafficking group met to explore ‘What is Slavery?’

Here’s what we came up with through our discussions:

WHAT IS SLAVERY (from our discussions)

 Exploitation
 Removal of rights
 Absence of choice
 It doesn’t affect me
 Property of someone
 Against a persons will
 Trapped in a way of life
 Slavery is biblical – discuss
 Since it doesn’t affect me…
 Bondage to something/one
 Power and disempowerment
 Can be caused by holistic poverty
 It’s the opposite to what Jesus came for
 Doesn’t respect class, geography, race, sexuality
 Bible offers advice on how to deal with cultural norms
 It’s usually associated with being black, dark, chains, wrong

WHAT IS GOD SAYING (listening prayer)

 Vulnerable – “SPEAK LIFE”
 We’re all slaves to something
 Breakthrough in the quietness and stillness
 What does it actually mean to be really free?
 “…if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (Jn 8:36, NIV)
 A movie (of ‘the Stand’?) on a billboard with the words “IMAGINE”
 “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (Jn 10:10, NIV)
 Are we prepared to be broken – we sing, “Break my heart for what breaks [God’s]…”
 Picture of light bulbs in a row coming on one after another (to symbolised inc. awareness / realization)
 Waking up in a deck chair in the centre of a major city surrounded by 1,000’s of people – everything you touch reveals the people who’ve been responsible for providing that thing. God asks, “Were they treated well or not?”
 “Before you’ve finished your breakfast this morning, you’ll have relied on half the world” – Martin Luther King

SOME POTENTIAL NEXT STEPS (from our discussion):

 “Imagine a market…”
 Awakening and re-awakening
 Speak life – what is life to the full?
 We are more connected than we think
 Ask ourselves and / or others ‘what is our stand?’
 Offer achievable, close, local, personal and practical choices
 Move from macro issues of slavery to the micro everyday lifestyle choices
 First we need to be broken, and the possible responses need to be broken-down
 A Network gathering / space that collaborates, connects, refers, refreshes, looks at solutions, resources + needs
 “The best thing you can do right now is to finish what you started last year and not let those good intentions grow stale. Your heart’s been in the right place all along. You’ve got what it takes to finish it up, so go to it” (2 Cor 8:10ff)
