In February Soul Action spent three days in Tshwane, Gauteng, gathering people that we’d began conversations with in October 2011, specifically concerning whether there is and / or a need for a space where people can explore Integral Mission (IM) in a way that’s been developing in Durban over the past 4.5 years.
It was a very interesting time that didn’t go exactly as we’d planned. We began with introductions – as we imagined people may not know each other – before leading a discussion around What is mission? Phil shared how some of his views on mission had changed over the years from a purely spiritual endeavour to a more holistic approach based on the way Jesus grew in Luke 2: 52.
After a short break for some refreshments…everything changed. Someone in the room raised a point about mission which left us with a choice to make – to press on with our plans for the day, or to go with the conversation that seemed to be developing in the room amongst people.
We opted for the latter, which – although a little uncomfortable at times – with the value of hindsight was absolutely the correct decision and probably God’s intention all along. It resulted in a really honest conversation, and left us with a better idea of what the resources and some of the needs in Tshwane are.
Over the coming weeks, months, years Soul Action will be working with local leaders, meeting people, building friendships, and introducing these people to one another in some of the ways that has happened in Durban in the last 4.5 years.
