This year myself and a colleague are working alongside a group of reading volunteers. The reading volunteers work within the school context and support the teacher in helping the children to develop reading skills. We are providing both training and mentoring to assist the volunteers in the important role they play.
During the first workshop we specifically focused on phonics; how to pronounce sounds in isiZulu and English and activities to facilitate with children to help them develop reading skills.
Through considering the pronunciation of sounds and reading activities the volunteers acquired an understanding that if the children develop the appropriate knowledge and skills in isiZulu they will be able to apply these when they start to learn English; that skills are transferable, and therefore English will be more accessible.
