Teaching children reading strategies

Teaching children reading strategies

Knowing their letter sounds does not guarantee that a child will be able to read. The blending of sounds to read and strategies to decode new words are skills that need to be taught.

During 2016, we worked with 8 educators from 2 schools on how to teach reading strategies and provide opportunities for the learners to practice these skills during shared reading. Shared reading allows the learners to practice their reading strategy skills in a safe environment but the learners seldom get the opportunity to practice these skills on their own.

The learner assessments and evaluation showed that the educators are primarily teaching the reading strategies of blending sounds to read and pictures. This observation was exciting as blending sounds to read a word is the most important reading strategy to teach learners.  Please click here to read the evaluation report
