Sunshine Kids Durban

shineSunshine Kids is a structured literacy program that aims to support children who are struggling to learn to read. Volunteers are placed in the school for an hour each week and become a ‘learning partner’ to a Grade 2 child. They read, write and play together to build confidence, communication skills and comprehension in English. Sunshine Kids is a social franchise “Chapter” of The Shine Centre, a not-for-profit literacy programme based in Cape Town.

There are Shine centres running at five different schools in the greater Durban area.

Shine has a strong ethos of children and volunteers working together as learning partners, and as a result was awarded the Reconciliation Award from the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in 2008.
