This year we have begun a new partnership with RidgeCity, a project that works in an area called Mariannridge (to the west of Durban) as the school within the community had identified illiteracy as a concern. RidgeCity was established in 2007 and is a community transforming organization with the express goal of seeing Mariannridge become a more positive, productive, and self-sufficient place to live. RidgeCity is about breaking the cycle of childhood neglect, abuse, violence, substance abuse, poverty, hopelessness and crime at grassroots level. They believe a functional community will lead to a functional country. Alongside Rachel, the ladies have started working with four classes of Grade 2 children, supporting them in the development of phonics skills. The teachers are very excited about the program. Soul Action continues to partner with the two projects that we worked with last year – Indlela and Greyville – working alongside four schools within Amaoti and Greyville. During January Rachel worked with a group of ladies from the community exploring learning styles and how to develop phonological awareness. 10 tutors are now working in a total of five schools benefiting approx. 1,000 children on a daily basis.
