Elements of a phonic lesson
We facilitated a further workshop in April as part of our program to empower 17 Grade 2 teachers to teach phonic lessons in six schools. The teachers worked through a process which helped them to reflect on how the phonics program had worked during the first term. Teachers worked in small groups and focused on a specific element of a phonics lesson. As a whole group we particularly discussed possible solutions to the problems teachers faced.
Also, through the workshop the teachers developed understanding of how to structure a lesson, specifically considering timing. During the second term we will be working alongside each teacher to enable them to teach a phonics lesson which includes a reinforcement activity, teaching and skills work.
One teacher commented:
“The workshop supports us in helping the children to develop skills so they can read on their own.”
