In 2008 – 2009, Soul Action carried out an audit of the issues imapcting the eThekwini Municipality, an area covering 2,292 sq km, with a population of 3.5 million.
According to our audit of 135 people, projects and churches the top issues facing the poor and marginalised are:
1. HIV and Aids
Those suffering the consequences of AIDS or HIV infection, or caring for AIDS sufferers.
Efforts to reduce new infections have had some success, but changing people’s behaviour takes time and factors that increase the risk of infection – such as poverty, social instability, illiteracy, sexual violence, and gender inequalities – cannot be addressed in the short term.

2. Orphans and Vunerable Children
Children who have lost or been estranged from their parents. Children who now carry parental responsibilities e.g. child-headed household.
3. Domestic Abuse
The physical, sexual or emotional abuse of children by family members or family friends.
