It’s about getting out and about and meeting individuals / groups on their terms, listening to their concerns, rather than imposing things on them.  It takes time, but if we’re to see sustainable transformation in South Africa, we think it’s essential.

Having said that, it’s not just about ‘getting results’; seeing as many individuals / groups and collecting as much data as possible.  It’s also about building relationships which, in time, have the potential to become the foundation for the kind of collaboration that may be neccessary to meet some of the needs that the audit identifies.

We’re in contact with more than 135 initiatives, with over 2,000 personnel, serving an incredible 77,000+ inidviduals.

We believe the ability to read and write and to be able to communicate is a key skill that will help children to have a positive future - Soul Action has a growing network of schools who feel the same way. By working closely with local churches and projects we can identify schools that are looking for support with Literacy. Our English and isiZulu speaking tutors have been trained to deliver the programme in schools, working closely with existing educators. Learners are informally assessed on a daily basis and formally assessed at the end of each term. Older learners are actively involved in their own assessments, they identify what they have achieved and decide their own targets for the following term.

Vision: to work with children, teachers and local tutors in schools to develop and improve literacy skills.

Project aims:

• to empower children to reach their potential by learning to read and write in English
• to train local tutors to work in schools
• to equip existing educators to teach children to read and write in English

Activities:

• Meeting tutors on a weekly basis for
  ongoing training, planning and preparation
• Working with existing educators in schools
• Tutors and educators team teaching lessons
• Planning and putting together the programme
• Providing the appropriate resources to teach literacy
• Equipping teachers and teaching children and to hear sounds and blends
• Equipping teachers and teaching children how to hear sounds in initial, medial and final positions
• Equipping teachers and teaching children how to use their knowledge of sounds and developing blending skills so children can read simple words
• Equipping teachers and teaching children how to use their knowledge of sounds and blends and developing segmenting skills so children can read more difficult words
• Encouraging children to apply the phonic skills they have developed to the reading of other words
• Teaching children high frequency words, i.e. my, was, like

In the process of mapping Soul Action meets people, projects and churches that express a desire to improve the way they serve the poor, those aren’t already tackling poverty share how they wish to but don’t necessarily know how to do so effectively.

Soul Action South Africa provides opportunities for individuals and groups to receive training designed to build their capacity and capability to serve the poor. A key priority for us is to model a method of community mobilisation which sees local people involved and empowered to the degree that they can assess and meet their own needs rather than rely on others to do things for them.

Vision:

to develop Centre’s of Excellence which are recognized for the quality of the way people who form them work with the poor.

Project aims:

• to provide opportunities where projects and churches can learn from one another
• to promote and develop good practice amongst people, projects and churches
• to mobilize communities to assess and meet their own needs with their resources

Activities:

• making international standards of quality accessible to grassroots projects
• using local Network’s as a means of providing mentoring and peer learning
• establishing a space where relationships make good practice sustainable
• combining training and biblical reflection with a structured approach collaborating to see city-wide change

1. PC Training

A course for staff members / volunteers which teaches the basic computer skills. The course (based on MS Office 2003) teaches the basics of windows, Word and Excel.

2. Project Management

A course which teaches staff members / volunteers how to successfully manage projects. The course teaches how to effectively plan, monitor, control and execute projects. Our trainer has adapted business model project management material for the South African Non-Profit sector.

3. Leadership Development

A course focusing on Christian principles of Leadership Development.  Through six interactive modules learners are encouraged to reflect on leadership and the kind of leader they want to become within their organisation.  The aim is to develop leaders that serve their community with integrity and purpose.  Suitable for volunteers, staff and management members.

A course for people working with children, exploring how to ensure those that are affected by HIV are catered for within their communities.
