Developing Reflection Skills
At the start of the second term in April we facilitated a further workshop for the Grade 3 teachers we are working with this year. One of the main aims of the workshop was to reflect on how the phonics program worked during the first term [January – March].
The teachers were asked to think about the previous terms work and identify the strengths and challenges.
The teachers really had to be encouraged to share their thoughts – they appeared concerned about how we would respond. I was so glad we pushed through because the discussions that followed when they shared about their challenges was extremely beneficial as it collectively enabled solutions to be sought.
In addition, we thought about the sounds and digraphs to be introduced during this term – how to pronounce each one, and the teachers were able to develop skills in using the phonics curriculum.
