Literacy Project Aims

Literacy Project Aims

We believe the ability to read and write and to be able to communicate is a key skill that will help children to have a positive future.

In 2009 Soul Action South Africa began to work with Indlela, an NPO working into schools in Amaoti a large informal settlement of approximately 100,000 people to the North of Durban. Although Indlela teach a successful Life-Skills programme in Amaoti, their Life-Skills team had begun to identify low levels of literacy as an obstacle to the success of their programme. The Literacy Project is therefore one of many responses that we feel is required in order to address the huge impact HIV and Aids is having on individuals and communities in KwaZulu Natal.

PROJECT VISION:

To work with children and teachers in
schools to develop and improve literacy skills

PROJECT AIMS:

Soul Action’s Literacy Project aims to work both with the children and the teachers.
sinpta

  • to empower the children to reach their full potential by learning to read and write in English (this is achieved by teaching children letter sounds, how to blend sounds to read words and how to segment to spell words)
  • to develop and train local educators to sustain and manage the program in local schools
  • to equip existing teachers to teach children to read and write in English through modeling, team-teaching, developing appropriate resources, and lesson plans
